Smile, Smile, Smile!

About a month ago, I wrote about sending hygiene kits to the children of the Siankaba Nursery School. Our friends Allison, Kevin, Jolie and Bella helped finance and assemble the kits. This morning I received news that the kits had finally arrived in Zambia!

Each kit contained:
2 or 3 child size toothbrushes with covers
1 tube (4.2 oz) of toothpaste
1 dental floss
1 face cloth
1 bar of soap
1 comb

It was just over a year ago that James and I visited the nursery school at Siankaba. Then, it was just a foundation of brick and stone. Now it is a fully functioning, solar powered building that allows for the pre-school education of 70 children aged 2-6. We dined with the headmaster of the pre-school - our friend Malindi - back in 2009. We were so impressed by his dedication and enthusiasm for preparing the children of the village for elementary school. That evening we pledged our support for the nursery school and for any effort that benefitted the children of Siankaba.

James and I were truly touched and overwhelmed by the hospitality shown to us by everyone we encountered in Botswana and Zambia. We sent the kits as a sort of 'anniversary' gift of our visit. During our visit, we learned also of the efforts of The U Foundation in funding the construction of the school. The U Foundation, based in Leicestershire, England, actively raises funds for a number of Zambian projects. Check them out if you get a chance!

Just take a look at these beautiful children! I just love seeing those smiles!

  1. We were honored to be able to help you with this wonderful project and the innocent, simple smiles on those kids' faces made it worth every minute and penny. We constantly have to remind ourselves that it's the simple, small things that make life worthwhile and bring joy to someone else. Thanks for letting us be a part of it.
